Mobile Device Management

Your rating: None (8 votes)

All Apple iOS MDM providers use the same method for managing iOS devices, an XML document called the configuration profile with iOS MDM management. That XML spec is defined by Apple. The iOS MDM specification is allowed by request to Apple. Because of this, all MDM providers will provide basically the same basic features. It's also important to note the (somewhat severe) limits of the configuration profile-based management:

So how will MDM providers differentiate themselves? That's an interesting question explored in the sections below, starting with the Comparison of MDM Providers. For example, they could differentiate client agent feature, easy enrollment, enterprise integration, rule based policy changes, app life cycle management or scalability.

Please help us complete these reviews by adding your experiences.

Requirements

In order to utilize MDM capabilities built-in to iOS 4, enterprises need to create push notification certificate from Apple. (visit identity.apple.com/pushcert and sign in with a verified Apple ID. refer: http://www.apple.com/iphone/business/it-center/deployment-mdm.html for detail)

If you are only implementing SCEP and MDM configuration management, iOS Developer Enterprise Program is not required. To build company app distribution over-the-air using enterprise appstore, your organization must enroll in the iOS Developer Enterprise Program (iDEP) iOS Developer Program. See Apple IOS Enterprise Developer Program Overview for requirements. The regular iOS Developer Program is for publishing apps to the iTunes App Store.

Apple Configurator vs. MDM

Your rating: None (20 votes)

Is Apple Configurator a cheap substitute fo true Mobile Device Management? Or is it something else entirely? We hope this comparison answers the question.

Some notes: when we write "MDM", we are speaking about the combination of ActiveSync, MobileConfig Profiles, and Apple's interface for MDM commands that is used by most vendors in our Comparison of MDM Providers.

Apple Configurator is listed twice, since it can be used in two different ways. Devices can be unsupervised -- which means the are simply prepared for deployment -- or supervised, something altogether different.

As an alternative to Configurator, you may want to consider GroundControl, which has many of the same features, packaged for enterprise use.

AppTrack

Provider Info
Phone:
+1 855 999 8765
Supports iOS 7:

AppTrack is a Mobile Device ecosystem Management solution. Developed with the specific needs of K-12 and higher-ed mobile device deployments, it goes far beyond the traditional IT-centric management of devices, instead allowing teachers to have more direct control of their devices to aid in classroom management. AppTrack allows teachers to have fine-grained control over device options like the use of Safari, YouTube, the camera, FaceTime, GameCenter, etc. without having to bother IT or be knowledgeable about MDM. They can also "push" content like movies, PDF's, web-links, and other content to the student's devices on-demand.

AppTrack also has a robust and flexible work-flow system designed to allow teachers to discover and request apps directly through our interface. Once requested, the workflow ensures that all appropriate approvals are met and funding sources identified to ensure full audit-ability is maintained. AppTrack ties directly into Apple's Volume Purchase Program (VPP) to automatically retrieve and manage bulk license purchases, eliminating the need to keep track of downloaded spreadsheets and extra licenses.

AppTrack is 100% cloud-based. It requires no additional equipment or modification to your networks. All SCEP/identity-management is included eliminating the need for expensive 3rd-party solutions. All interaction with the software is done via a web browser so no additional client-side software needs to be installed or maintained, making an ideal solution for over-worked IT departments.

Apple Profile Manager

Provider Info
Supports iOS 7:
Supports iOS 8:

Apple Lion Server's Profile Manager provides mobile device management.

Set-Up

Profile Manager uses directory services and Apple Push Notification Service to provide configuration profiles to Mac OS X and iOS devices.

Unlike commercial MDM solutions, Apple does not require enrollment in the iDEP (iOS Developer Enterprise Program).

Apple's solution only supports iOS devices. There is no support for Android, Blackberry or Windows Mobile devices.

Documentation

Help available at http://help.apple.com/profilemanager/mac

Deployment

To use Profile Manager as mobile device management server, your Mac must have a static Internet network address and cannot be on a closed network. iOS and Mac OS X Lion devices communicate with the server to obtain configuration profiles over the network.

After a device is enrolled with the server, it is called a managed device, and you can update its configuration as well as query its status using Profile Manager. Additionally, you can lock and wipe Mac OS X Lion computers and iOS devices. You can also clear the passcode on iOS devices, if its owner has forgotten their passcode.

Profile Manager's built-in user portal allows you to send new and updated configuration profiles created with Profile Manager to users after they enroll their devices.

NOTE: You can also distribute the XML configuration files by email, posting on a webpage, or via Apperian EASE.

Endpoint Protector - Mobile Device Management secures your mobile devices and keeps a close eye on sensitive enterprise data both inside and outside companies' walls.

Marketing Info

HEAT LANrev allows organizations to persistently manage and secure all of their endpoints from a single console, including PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices. HEAT LANrev can be deployed as a complete asset management solution as well as a stand-alone solution for Mobile Device Management (MDM), With a single console to manage your entire IT deployment, you can replace multiple systems with a single solution for a cost effective result.

HEAT LANrev does not require an agent to be installed on the device for basic management functions, such as device enrollment, device querying, deploying configuration profiles, or locking and wiping devices. However, there is an app provided called LANrev Apps that serves a number of particularly compelling functions:

Other unique features include the ability to build profiles with variable data inputs. For example, a standard Exchange profile for all users could include the symbolic “email address”, “username,” and other necessary fields. The actual data, customized per user, is inserted to the profile when it is deployed.

MacAfee EMM

Provider Info
Phone:
+1 888 847 8766

McAfee EMM combines secure mobile application access, anti-malware, strong authentication, high availability, a scalable architecture, and compliance reporting in a seamless system. Integration with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (McAfee ePO) enables IT to implement persistent policies and ease compliance management — while protecting devices and the corporate network from malware. McAfee EMM also helps drive down mobile device management and support costs and overall TCO by leveraging your enterprise’s existing data center infrastructure and IT network, including directory services, Wi-Fi, VPN, and PKI.

McAfee EMM relies on the REST web services implementation to automate help desk functions, including efficiently decommissioning mobile users when needed.

McAfee EMM delivers:

Mobile security — Properly configures mobile devices to match corporate security policies and enforces compliance prior to network access. Provides malware protection for Android with McAfee VirusScan Mobile for Enterprise. Secures corporate email, calendar and contacts from personal data with McAfee Secure Container. Both are available with McAfee EMM to be distributed as a recommended app.

Easy deployment and configuration — Eases mobility management by automating the configuration and connectivity of VPN, Wi-Fi, PKI, and native email sync. Personalization features equip the device with a user’s unique credentials to allow access to user-specific application services and enforcement of role-based policies. Bulk group provisioning helps administrators to quickly enable large groups of corporate users.

A scalable mobile security architecture — Seamlessly manages a few or thousands of mobile devices over a geographically dispersed data network, while efficiently assisting users when problems arise.
