Check In/Out
Hi we currently have no iOS devices deployed and are in the process of acquiring iPads and an MDM. I have demoed several MDMs all of which have different odds and ends. We are a school district and have multiple users per device with 5 times as many unique users as devices. We were wondering if there is a MDM with an over the air Check In/Out type features or features that can be crafted to make a single user device elegantly resemble the unique user environment we have in our desktop environment?
Thank You

It isn't the same as MDM, but
It isn't the same as MDM, but have you checked out Apple Configurator?

Yes, the Apple Configurator
Yes, the Apple Configurator was my point of reference. Their marketing dept uses the terminology of Check In/Out analogously to Log In/Out and Log On/Off. If I swing over to an MDM provider they they often suggest a share point app, an online box app or an SMB app. I just don't see an easy, simple or clean end user experience for this type of functionality. I was just wondering if there was a 3rd party way to have some of the basic functionality and elegance we commonly find in the multiuser experience that is in the desktop environment.
Thanks for the response.

Have another look at
Have another look at Configurator. Especially be sure to see Tech Recess's video on supervised devices. Configurator was originally designed with shared classrooms in mind, with a single Mac and a charging cart with two dozen iPads. iPads can be assigned to users quickly between classes, and user documents and settings follow the users.

CIPA for the classroom
How are you overcoming CIPA with respect to the student being able to remove the MDM Profile and then having full acces to the Internet and app store?
I would be Interested as we have been trying to do this at a few schools who eventually went with a locked down tablet (not iPad).

CIPA for the classroom.
It doesn't appear to be a problem from our MDM demos. They appear to have the ability to "lock" the mdm profile. Store locking looks to be a tricky and maybe a non option but with VPP the endpoints won't be able to buy directly. There are controlled browser products or application virtualization/presentation if a device is taken outside of the district network but must have controlled web access. These questions might warrant another thread.

Apple Configurator
I don't know of an MDM product that will do this. But as previously mentioned, with Apple Configurator installed on a sync computer you can "Assign" students to various iPads (and you can use ARD to manage various sync computers from a remote location if you need to). Apple Configurator will keep the user experience the same every time he/she checks out an iPad.
Example: John "checks out" iPad01 using Configurator and adds content (data, photos, applications, etc). When John "checks in" iPad01, Apple Configurator on the sync computer will back up all of the data from iPad01 and will wipe it clean, restoring a default configuration on it. Jane can then "check out" iPad01 and have a new experience from John. John can then check out iPad02 (in Configurator John gets "Assigned" to iPad02) and Configurator will restore the backup from John's previous experience on iPad01 onto iPad02. John now has all of his data, photos, applications, etc that he had on iPad01 and has the same experience that he had previously. Here's a link to a document that may help you with Apple Configurator: http://images.apple.com/iphone/business/docs/iOS_Apple_Configurator_Mar1... .
Hope this helps!
