Apple Configurator 1.3 speeds iOS deployments and supervision

No votes yet

Apple today updated Apple Configurator, it's unique Mac app for the development and assignment of iOS devices. The new version, 1.3, includes the following changes:

  • Significantly improved reliability, scalability and performance
  • A new status view that includes time estimates and error information with recovery suggestions
  • Ability to cancel scheduled or in-progress operations
  • Administrators can install apps on devices configured to not allow users to install apps

Configurator is free on the Mac App Store.

Not as many crashes, but just as many errors

I've reverted back to v1.2.1 because I've had less issues with that than with this "update"

The very first thing I tried was to update iOS to 6.1.3 on only six iPod Touches. Each time I tried it would begin the update (black screen with apple logo, progress bar) and then every iPod would list the error, "Completed with an error, unable to install iOS 6.1.3," in Apple Configurator. No error information, no recovery suggestions, never did get this to work.

Next I tried installing configuration profiles...one. at. a. time...on unsupervised devices. This is where I gave up and went back to v1.2.1. With the older version I can update iOS on numerous devices then install a wireless profile and a JAMF enrollment profile, the only setback being you have to tap each individual device to install the profiles (all with only the Prepare tab in Apple Configurator, no supervision required).

As far as bug reports, I figured every time it crashed and I sent that report to Apple they would catch what was causing the problems.

How to go back to v1.2.1

Your rating: None

Hi fcsmactech
Please, please tell me how you went back to v1.2.1 - I don't have the option of Time MAchine, and I'm hoping you know another way!
The new version of configurator has totally wiped out our iPad program at our school for this term until they find a fix. 10 classes of students and teachers needing their ipads in 2 days is far more immediate than any fix being made available I'm guessing.
Seeing others have had so many problems, and sent reports, it's a real shame this awful version is still the only app available on the App Store - unwittingly we update all apps and are now stuck!
I'm now trying to find a way back to v 1.2.1 Any help much appreciated!!

Apple just released 1.3.1 on

Your rating: None

Apple just released 1.3.1 on 7/29 that apparently allows for deploying a single profile to multiple unsupervised devices. I have not yet tried it out in our integration/deployment facility yet.

Apple Configurator 1.3.1

They worded it to sound like they added a feature. You still can only install one profile on one unsupervised device at a time with version 1.3.1.

Again, I'm going back to v1.2.1.

Interesting. Right from the

Interesting. Right from the App Store description:

"Apple Configurator 1.3.1 improves stability on OS X Lion and allows a single configuration profile to be installed on all unsupervised devices in Prepare."

In the beginning of a 600 iPad rollout for a school...I'll just stick with 1.2.1 as well for now.
