No-Apple ID, App Distribution by Device: Which MDMs have this already?

Your rating: None (4 votes)

One of the most anticipated features of iOS is the ability to distribute VPP apps to devices without Apple IDs, as long as certain conditions are met: device is on iOS 9, app was purchased through VPP, app developer opted in, MDM supports this feature.

What is unclear at this time is WHICH MDM providers support this feature today. As far as I can tell, very few were ready on day 1. Was yours?

Does your MDM support per-Device app distribution? Please post your MDM vendor and your experiences here. Maybe we can get them to prioritize this feature.

I've heard from AirWatch (not yet), and MobileIron Cloud (not yet, October) and MobileIron Core (not yet). Has anyone gotten more specific dates from these? How about JAMF, MaaS360, Meraki, ...?

JAMF's JSS

JAMF's JSS does not yet support it. There's hope it will at the end of the month when they update to support El Capitan, but nothing confirmed.

This is VERY disappointing.

This is VERY disappointing. When the AirWatch user's group met with Apple in NYC three weeks ago, this feature was discussed in depth and no mention was made that it would not be supported.

TabPilot MDM for schools supports this now

Your rating: None (1 vote)

TabPilot released version 5.1 last week when iOS 9 was released. Support for assigning apps to devices (no Apple ID needed) is in this release as well as support for new restrictions in iOS 9 that can keep students from changing the wallpaper, passcode, or device name...great features in shared device deployments in particular. www.tabpilot.com

AirWatch does expect to support this feature, from everything I've heard. My understanding is that Apple was late releasing the specification.

Or Air-Watch was spinning all

Your rating: None

Or Air-Watch was spinning all its cycles on things like Android feature support & snake oil cross platform biometrics and it caught them flat footed. (aka they are spread way , way too thin in terms of fear sets for their dev and QA to be really solid)

One of the two.

I just wish one of the big MDM vendors would go all in on Apple - JAMF is really the only one doing it, and they are seeing market success for it.

It's even worse

Your rating: None

When I spoke with a support person from AirWatch last week, I asked about the distribution by device. He told me that it's possible we may not see this fully implemented until next school year (August/September 2016.) He told me not to count on it for this current school year.

Profile Manager works

Your rating: None

We use Profile Manager for our 100 iOS devices. App distribution by device works good. No need to push the apps, no need to make Apple-IDs. They just appear on the devices. Wonderful !

Device Based App Deployment caveat

Your rating: None

From what we've been told by our Apple Support engineer and JAMF engineer, pushing apps by device has one important caveat: The documents/settings for that app will NOT be included in any iCloud backups.

For shared cart based iPads this is ideal since a) iCloud backups typically aren't used and b) having that App data sandboxed is good security wise... you wouldn't want someone to be backing up someone else's data if they were somehow able to enable iCloud backups with their own accounts.

For devices assigned to individuals it's recommended that they a) have their own iCloud account and b) apps are pushed to them the previous way (accept vpp invitation, etc...)

Here's a bulletin:

Caveat for Device based app deployment:

Your rating: None

JAMF does support this (as mentioned) with their recent update.

Keep in mind the caveat that for Apps that are deployed this way, NO documents or data will be included in iCloud backups due to sandboxing.

While this is great for shared carts, it was recommended to us that iPads deployed to individuals (staff, 1:1 students) use the invitation based app deployment. In our case we are making sure they all have their own iCloud accounts with backups being created.

Mobile Iron Roadmap is Mid 2016

Your rating: None

Challenged my SE at Mobile Iron about the timing of this highly demanded feature. I was informed and then confirmed via a second SE that the internal MobileIron roadmap for the Device ID feature is Mid 2016.

Of course I gave them hell about it since we will be vetting iOS 10 by the time they plan on rolling out the Device ID support.

Unbelievable!

App Updates

Your rating: None

question rather than comment: I use Profile Manager to push apps without apple IDs. It works well. However, once an app is automatically updated through Profile Manager it stops working. Automatically updated apps crash right after start (iMovie, evernote, Google translate, etc). Push iOS updates do not work either. Have you experienced anything similar? I cannot find a solution to this problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

SimpleMDM has VPP Device Assignment for iOS 9

Your rating: None

This feature is available today and can be used immediately. New accounts, by default, assign VPP licenses directly to Apple device serial numbers instead of Apple IDs.

If you have an existing account, you can switch your account to use device assignment by visiting the Settings tab in the App section.

Your first five devices are free on SimpleMDM, so you can try this feature without making a purchase decision.
